Does a bedroom require a full bath on the same floor per code?

I'm buying a foreclosure that's listed with the Realtor as a 3BR, 2.5 bath. County tax records show it as a 4 bedroom. If you look at the house, there are three obvious bedrooms, a rec room, and 2 baths upstairs. Downstairs has formal living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast area, and den. I'd like to put up doors to the formal living room, frame out a closet, and make this the fourth bedroom, but there's only a half-bath downstairs. Is there a requirement that a full bath be on the same floor as the bedroom? I want to be able to sell it as a four-bedroom.

Thanks!Does a bedroom require a full bath on the same floor per code?
Only your local city codes can answer that. Take a trip to city hall's planning and building.Does a bedroom require a full bath on the same floor per code?
Thanks for the best answers. Good luck with your deal.

In my county in order for a room to be called a bedroom, it must have a window large enough for a pregnant woman to get out of in case on an emergency, as well as a closet. It doesn't make any difference where the bathroom is as long as the closet and window are there.

Note: If you are buying a house on a septic system (not public water) you may not be able to add an additional bedroom if you don't have a perc for a 4 bedroom house. Just something to consider!
