What time of year can I start laying outside to get a tan?

Hi all, I live in Chicago, and I read that really you can get a tan anytime as long as it's sunny. However I dunno. What time of year can I start laying outside (and it doesn't necessary have to be warm out, sometimes it takes awhile to warm up here, I just want the attempt of laying out to be worth the time) I know in the summer people would look in the paper for a number called a uv index? It determined the best days and times to lay out. Today, that number for my area code is 2. So when would that number start being high enough for it to be worth my time to lay outside? Anyone know? I searched the web for awhile and couldn't find anything! Yeah, and self tanners, I've tried em all. Thanks!!What time of year can I start laying outside to get a tan?
Well first of all you need to wait till it's warm enough so you don't freeze! But usually for something to be worth your time, you need the UV Index to be at LEAST a 6..and it's probably better if it's a seven. But anything that is lower than a 6 probably is a waste of your time. For self tanners, the best one that I will swear by is Toma's Tan Perfect, you can get it online or at Sally's Beauty Supply House. It has a colorguide to it so it is comepletey streak free, and its a natural substance that works with your skin to give you the tan.

Good luck~

Every year, the professional bodies of dermatologists publish guidelines for the protection of people from UV.

Nowadays, it is not a question of beauty but a question of safety. Get informed about it and I am quite sure that you will rephrase: Should I stay outstairs to get a tan?

You say that you couldn't find any informative site about it. Here is one of the American Academy of Dermatology

http://www.aad.org

Enter their site, then you will see three main section. One of them is the public resource center ; click on dermatology A-Z and then click on the letter "s"

They have published an article entitled: New research in sun protection shines. The light on sunscreen and importance of sunsafe behaviors beyond adolescence to lower skin cancer risk.

It is informative and evenmore published in a trustworthy site.

Another very informative article from this site that is addressed to the general public, has been published at the FDA site. I'm explaining you how to find it.

Type http://www.fda.gov and you will go to the main page. Then click on A-Z Index that is found on the left side of the page then click on the letter "s" and then click on tanning.

I say this and then I am leaving.

Take care to sunburns: skin cancer incidence is proportional to the sunburns you have had in your life.

This is another link that maybe you will find interesting to read. It is about sunscreen products.

Look at this also

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=鈥?/a>

It is about safety of use, isn't it interesting?

You should get informed also about carotene pills. It is a food supplement. Carotene is the precursor of vitamin A and it is supposed to help tanning. Maybe you have used it already, so you know that you have to start early taking it.

I can't indicate you any specific site about this, just put it in a search engine.

*EDIT*

1. I came back to tell you that you have a lovely avatar.

It reminds me Garsotini, a cat that I had in the past.

2. I've read your answers and I have seen that you was not really happy about the answers and the "evils of tanning".

Sorry, if I/we felt the need to say something more in order to protect you.

Well, my personal thought (with absolutely no scientific backup whatsoever) is that if you're going to tan you should begin as early in the season as possible to give your skin time to adjust. I would DEFIANTELY avoid high UV days regardless of what time of year it was. I personally think a light tan is much more attractive than a very dark one.

I don't suppose that answers your question, though. I hope someone can give you a better answer. What time of year can I start laying outside to get a tan?
Whenever there is sun..or even overcast sky's....you will get some type of color
You were kind enough to answer my question about my arthritic cat so I thought I would drop you a line about tanning. I worked in a health unit and it was brought home to me the evils of tanning both in the sun and tanning beds. You don't have to wait until you are old and grey to get skin cancer; people are getting it younger and younger, especially as the ozone layer continues to deteriorate. PLEASE be careful.............
Seriously, tanning isn't worth the time and damage. You should go for a beautiful face, and keep that body from turning into a prune
You do know that tanning will give you skin cancer. Just thought I'd say that.
