Is the Hyde Park area ghetto?

I am looking for apartments and I found a couple I like around the Hyde park area near south shore drive. But when I looked up zip code states, it was like 3 x as many black people as white. I am just wondering if it's a safe neighborhood, I'm not racist. Is the Hyde Park area ghetto?
hyde park is fine, everything surrounding it is not however
I think Hyde Park is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago....I love it because in my experience, the people are very friendly. There is this very delicious restaurant you should also try out there called Far East Kitchen....the best Chinese/Cantonese food around...a friend of mine lives in Hyde Park and she loves it... there are alot of college students and everyone pretty much minds their own business. Is the Hyde Park area ghetto?
I love when people say, I'm not racist but...... This area has more black people that white, is it still safe? You dueche bag.
You sound racist. Is the Hyde Park area ghetto?
Chicago has a lot of middle class and wealthy black people. (Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan are certainly not poor.) Even the poorer people are mostly hard-working people who are trying to make the best of their lives. There are some dangerous places in Chicago, but race is not necessarily the determining factor for what makes a place unsafe.

While Hyde Park is on the infamous "south side", it is a very safe neighborhood that is home to the prestigious University of Chicago and the famous Museum of Science and Industry. Hyde Park is majority black (though 3 times seems more than the sense I'd have of the place), but the residents are mostly either college students or upper middle class families. There are nearby areas that are high crime inner city neighborhoods, but Hyde Park itself is definitely NOT a ghetto.
Beautiful neighborhood especially the UofC campus. I did not feel threatened walking around during the day. No one hasseled me. Many people commute to campus via train and live in safer neighborhoods. Probably the safest areas in Hyde Park will be where students live. Venturing west of Hyde Park is not recommended. Stay away from Washington Park.
No, it's middle class BUT the U of C students drive up the rents. And it is a little bit dangerous at night.

Consider other neighborhoods unless you work in Hyde Park.
You say you're not racist, but you find out there are more black people living there than white and immediately wonder if it's safe.

There is crime there, just as there is crime in ALL Chicago neighborhoods. There are rapes and robberies and murders in Lincoln Park, the Gold Coast, Wrigleyville, etc. Are there as many? Maybe, maybe not. But the fact remains: they occur in those places too. Hyde Park is home to the University of Chicago. It is a mixed community. Some of the surrounding area may be a little dicey, but if you don't walk around like a "victim" you'll be OK. But if that's not good enough for you, look for an apartment in the Gold Coast or Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville. You'll pay a lot more for less space, but you'll be "safe"
It's not ghetto in hyde park, but you have to be careful there through the night. don't walk around at night by yourself.keep your eyes and ears open at all times if you have to go out at night time.
So more black people than white people = unsafe to you but you're "not a racist"?! I think you need to re-examine your thought process on that one. Crime stats would indicate safety, not racial profiling.

Why don't you come down and visit to judge for yourself how "ghetto" it is. It is a beautiful neighborhood filled with ALL sorts of nationalities, colors and religions. I can walk to soul food restaurants, French restaurants, Korean restaurants and Lebanese restaurants. My neighbors are friendly and helpful. My mortgage is affordable. I can get to downtown in about half an hour on 3 different express busses.

Better yet, stay away because I really don't want *you* as my neighbor.
Hyde Park itself is relatively safe - that's the area around the University of Chicago, centered around 50th to 60th street, from the lake to near the edge of Washington Park. It's a very mixed neighborhood, black and white, and actually is a nice example of how races can live together in harmony - Hyde Park has both groups playing in the parks, walking around the university, and taking part of the culture without much difficulty.

The surrounding area isn't exactly "ghetto" - it's relatively poor, but gentrifying, particularly Kenwood, just north of Hyde Park. Parts of Washington Park are quite nice as well. They are indeed majority black neighborhoods, but aren't particularly unsafe, as compared to neighborhoods like Englewood, which truly are.
only rich people live in hyde park barak obama lives in hyde park
..I've only driven thru there. It wasn't ghetto per se but I wouldn't live there or walk around at night.
No with Univ of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry nearby this is not a ghetto. Crime is just par like in any other parts of town.
You do not really sound like a racist, you sound like a concerned person moving to an unknown city of 3 million people and have concerns of where you will be living! Hyde Park is a safe but culturally diverse neighborhood, it has a nice attractions and is close to the city center with easy access to downtown but surrounding areas can be questionable, You must proceed with caution as in any big city. Many Chgo celebrities and well to do live in HP, it's close to the lake etc. However if you would feel safer in a "white neighborhood" initially, choose something in Lincoln Park, Jefferson Park , downtown (if you can afford it),or on the northwest side, until you become more familiar with Chgo. Chgo is full of diversity which makes it unique. It is a great town to live in!!ENJOY!
